Special Awards

THE McKAY AWARD

The Hall of Fame has been giving this award in honor of Coach McKay since 1984.  It is given to the most outstanding offensive and defensive linemen in the Stockton Metropolitan area.  The late Wallace “Bud” McKay was a long-time coach at the old Stockton High School and former All-Pacific Coast Conference tackle at his alma mater, Washington State College. McKay was honored for coaching by the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

THE SOLOMON AWARD

This award is given in honor of the late Fred “Solly” Solomon, coach at Stockton High School from 1927 through 1946 (except from 1943-45 when he was in the Navy).  It is given to the most outstanding offensive and defensive backfield football players from the Stockton Metropolitan Area.  Solomon played at Stanford and was in the same starting backfield with the great Ernie Nevers.  Solomon was honored for coaching by the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

THE FRANK ALUSTIZA AWARD

The Frank Alustiza Award, formerly given by the Bochie Wolves Club, is presented to the outstanding local high school football player who also exemplifies the qualities of leadership, citizenship and academic ability shown by the former Stanford All-American.  Alustiza was a football star at Stockton High School, who also excelled in the classroom and served as President of the student body.  He went on to Stanford, where he was a member of the “Vow Boys” that went to the Rose Bowl three times (1933, 1934, 1935).  He passed away in 1954 while a coach at Sacramento High School.  In 1966 he was honored for football by the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame presents these prestigious football awards at the annual Jack O’Keefe Scholarship Dinner held in March at the Italian Athletic Club.  If you are interested in attending this fundraiser, contact Jim Moscatelli (209) 639-3877, or Pat Doyle (209) 607-4048.
