In 2023-2024, Coach Gina Johnson completed
her 28th season as Head Women’s Basketball Coach
of the San Joaquin Delta College Lady Mustangs
basketball program. Her record at Delta is 678
217 (.758). After a total of 32 years of coaching, her
record is 763-244 (.758).
The Lady Mustangs have been a program to
contend with since Coach Johnson took over in 1996
and led the Mustangs to Bay Valley Conference
Championships in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. In
2005, Delta College became a member of the new Big 8 Conference and won the conference
championship in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2020, 2022 and 2024.
Gina was named the Northern California Coach of the Year by her colleagues in 26+002, 2015
and 2020. The Mustangs have dominated the conference winning fourteen championships in
the past 20 years. She was named the Conference Coach of the Year from 2004-2008, 2014,
2020 and 2022. She is proud of the players that have graduated and transferred to four-year
institutions. There are 97 former Mustangs who have earned basketball scholarships since
1996. Since 1997, the Mustangs have a 97% transfer and graduation rate. This is because of
the strong academic focus instilled within the program.
Gina’s goal as a coach has been to help develop her student-athletes on and off the
basketball court. Her main objective is to prepare her student-athletes to transfer and assist
them in earning an athletic scholarship. In addition to the strong academic culture, Coach
Johnson’s coaching philosophy includes teaching an up-tempo style of offense and defense
to prepare the student-athletes for the academic and athletic demands that four-year
schools expect of the student-athletes.
Coach Johnson is a 1991 graduate of Cal Poly State in San Luis Obispo. She finished her
playing career as a two-year starting guard. Prior to Cal Poly, she was a Junior College All
Conference player and an All-State player for De Anza Junior College. She was named MVP
of the Coast Conference in 1988 and was honored to be named to the California Community
College All-State First Team. She has a Master’s Degree in Physical Education and Athletic
Administration from St. Mary’s College in Moraga.
She is married to Mike Johnson, a Delta College program recruiting coordinator
for the athletic department. Mike retired after being a Head Varsity Football coach in the
Stockton and Elk Grove areas for 25 years. He now enjoys recruiting for the Mustangs for the
past six seasons. They have two sons, Brandon (27) and Brady (24). Brandon graduated from
Boise State University and works as a Video Content Creator for STN Digital out of San Diego.
He resides in Huntington Beach. Brady graduated from San Diego State and completed his
Master’s Degree at Cal Berkeley. He works for Lockheed Martin as a Senior Systems Engineer
and with SBIRS Flight Operations Support. He resides in the Bay Area.
