The Calaveras Babe Ruth All-Star Baseball Team was the 1st team from Stockton to go to the Babe Ruth World Series held in Anderson, Indiana in 1965. They were a group of young men selected from the teams in the league and coached by a group of men who collectively put in long hours to prepare the team for the national stage. They were asked to be scrappy, hard-working, and do what the coaches asked. They did and it worked. Though not being the most talented team, they did the little things as well as anyone. In 1965 Stockton hosted the Pacific Southwest Regional Championships with teams from Arizona, Hawaii, Utah, Nevada, California, and Agua, Mexico. The Calaveras team defeated the teams from Inland Port, Bear Creek, Tuolumne, and Lodi to become the local representative. For this historic journey, they received tremendous support from the community, including generous contributions for equipment and sound hire to amplify the cheers of their hometown fans across the nation. The excitement of their journey was also captured and displayed on a gala dinner video screen, allowing the entire community to share in the pride and joy of their achievements. If you’re looking for staging, you can click here for additional information for your event.
They defeated Utah 6-2, Fresno 6-1, and Hawaii 6-1. Since this was a double elimination tournament, they played Sherman Oaks three times, winning 2-0, losing 10-1, and defeating them 1-0 in eleven innings to advance. The team traveled to Indiana for the National Tournament by Greyhound Bus. Most other teams flew in. After a three-day trip that seemed like three months, they lost their first two games and were eliminated. Needless to say, the bus trip home was a long ride. The team consisted of: Doug Adams, Doug Bennett, Larry Estes, Jack Faunce, Chris Forster, Ricky Healy, Bob Kobata, Dave Loring, Dave Martin, Doug Martin, Don Menjarez, Casey Ortez, Bill Scott, Mel Sutters, John Weeks Jr., and bat boy Sam Alexander. The coaches were: Manager Corky Ortez, Coaches Dick Silver, Paul Zaby, and John Weeks Sr.
