Steve Towne
Football, Coach
Steve grew up in Long Beach, participating in football, wrestling, track and baseball. At Long Beach City College he played quarterback in 1971 and ’72.
In 1973 Steve came to UOP to play quarterback. In 1973 he was the backup until the last four games, when he led UOP to four straight wins. In 1974 he started all games and finished with a 10-4 record as a starting quarterback.
Following college, he coached football at Cal State Fullerton. UOP then hired him to be their quarterback and running back coach. He coached at UOP from 1983-88.
From 1989-2001 he was head coach of the St. Mary’s High School football team. Steve’s record over 13 years at St. Mary’s High School head football coach was 92 wins, 48 losses and 3 ties. Under his coaching, St. Mary’s teams won three San Joaquin Athletic Association League championships and participated in the post-season playoffs eight times.
He also was the head Track and Field coach from 1994-1997 and again from 2002-2010. His track teams won five league championships and two section championships with seven trips to the State Meet. He has been coaching football at the sophomore and freshman levels while also coaching baseball and track and field at St. Mary’s.
